Shoppers often search for an aluminum gazebo expecting an aluminum roof. In practice, most hardtops sold as “aluminum” pair an aluminum frame with a galvanized steel roof. True aluminum roofs exist, but they are uncommon. This aluminum vs galvanized steel gazebo roof guide explains the difference and how to read a listing so you know which one you are buying.
At a glance
| Factor | Aluminum roof | Galvanized steel roof |
|---|---|---|
| Rust | Does not rust | Zinc coating protects the steel until it is breached |
| Weight | Lighter panels | Heavier panels |
| Stiffness | Softer metal; dents more easily | Stiffer for the same thickness |
| Snow claims in listings | Rarely stated as a figure | Often stated (2,100 to 3,000 lbs on several models) |
| Availability | A handful of listings in our catalog | The large majority of metal-roof hardtops |
Read the listing, not the headline
Many of the best-known “aluminum” hardtops have steel roofs. PURPLE LEAF sells a model titled “Aluminum Gazebo 12′ X 18′ Double Roof,” and its listing describes a “galvanized steel top.” Outsunny’s 10×12 hardtop lists “a galvanized steel hardtop roof and a powder-coated aluminum frame.” Kozyard, YOLENY, and EROMMY follow the same pattern. Check the material line for the roof specifically. If the listing only says “metal roof,” ask the seller or assume steel.
Where aluminum roofs appear
In our October 2026 catalog only a few listings describe an aluminum roof: for example a Betisef 8×8 “all-aluminum” hardtop, a Yardenaler 10×14 lean-to with a “sloped aluminum roof,” and an AMERLIFE spruce gazebo with an aluminum hardtop. Louvered pergolas are the other big source of aluminum roofs, since their blades are aluminum on nearly every model. See Best Aluminum Louvered Pergolas if that is the structure you are considering.
Snow, wind, and dents
Steel-roof listings are much more likely to publish a snow figure. Backyard Discovery goes as far as saying its 29-gauge steel roof “provides a superior quality to snow and weather sensitive aluminum roofs.” That is the manufacturer’s position, but it reflects a real material trait: aluminum is softer, so a thin aluminum panel can dent under hail or a falling branch where steel of the same thickness would not. Aluminum roofs make up for this with thicker panels or ribbing. If you get snow, choose a model that states a snow rating, whichever metal it uses, and follow Gazebo Snow Load Explained.
Rust and coastal sites
Aluminum wins here. Galvanized steel is protected by zinc and usually paint, and sellers describe it as “fade-resistant and rust-resistant” (PURPLE LEAF, EROMMY). Cut edges, scratched panels, and screw holes are where rust starts. Near salt air, check panel edges and fasteners each season, or choose an aluminum roof if you can find one in the size you need.
Choose an aluminum roof if
- You live near the coast and want to avoid any rust maintenance.
- You get little snow and the site is not under trees that drop branches.
- You find a model whose size and anchoring fit your space.

Who should skip each
Skip an aluminum roof if you need a stated snow load and the listing does not give one, or if hail is common where you live. Skip galvanized steel if the gazebo will sit in salt spray and you will not check it for rust.

How we put this guide together
We compared the listings in our product catalog (October 2026) on the specifications and claims each manufacturer publishes. Counts are approximate and refer to listings, so size and color variants of one model are counted separately. Wind, snow, and load figures are manufacturer claims, not our own measurements, and quotes are taken from the named listings. Our evaluations are based on manufacturer specifications and aggregated owner feedback.
