Every louvered pergola lets you tilt the roof blades. The question is whether you do it with a pole or crank, or with a motor and a remote. A motor adds convenience and a few extra features, but it also adds wiring, electronics, and cost. Here is a motorized vs manual louvered pergola comparison based on the listings we track.

How many of each you can actually buy

Manual louvered pergolas dominate. In our October 2026 catalog, only about a dozen louvered listings are sold as motorized or electric, and most of those have fewer than 20 ratings. The models with deep owner feedback, such as the PURPLE LEAF 94AS line, use adjustable poles that tilt the blades “from 0° to 90°.” That matters because a large rating pool is one of the few signals you have about how a pergola holds up after a few seasons.

Convenience

A motor is easiest to justify on larger roofs. Sellers split big manual pergolas into two or four independently adjusted sections, which means walking around with a pole to change the shade. Motorized models do it from a remote: Greesum, Patiowell, and Aoxun all describe remote-controlled roofs. ALEKO lists a rain sensor plus app and remote control on one 10×12 model, which can close the blades when rain starts. Manual cranks have their own fans: some glass-enclosed pergola listings point out that a hand crank works “without electricity, motors, batteries, or complicated electronic components.”

Power and safety

A motorized pergola needs power. YOLENY sells a “solar and electric powered” model, and other listings expect an outdoor outlet. Any hardwired connection should be installed by a licensed electrician to your local electrical code, using outdoor-rated components and a GFCI-protected circuit. Follow the manufacturer’s wiring instructions exactly; do not improvise extension cord runs to a permanent structure. Local codes and permit rules vary, so check them before you buy.

What happens when it breaks

Motors and controllers are extra parts that can fail, and with newer listings it is hard to know how easy replacements are to get. Check whether the seller offers a manual override. Aoxun says one of its 9×12 models can be adjusted “manually when needed, even during a power outage,” which is a useful feature to look for. Ask about the warranty on the motor separately from the frame.

Choose manual louvers if

  • You want the model with the most owner feedback for your size.
  • You do not have outdoor power near the patio.
  • You adjust the roof a few times a day at most.

Who should skip each

Skip motorized if you cannot run power safely to the pergola, or if you want a model with a long ownership track record; the motorized listings we track are mostly new. Skip manual if anyone in the household cannot comfortably reach and work an overhead pole, or if you want the roof to close itself when it rains.

How we put this guide together

We compared the listings in our product catalog (October 2026) on the specifications and claims each manufacturer publishes. Counts are approximate and refer to listings, so size and color variants of one model are counted separately. Wind, snow, and load figures are manufacturer claims, not our own measurements, and quotes are taken from the named listings. Our evaluations are based on manufacturer specifications and aggregated owner feedback.
