Gazebo shape affects more than looks. A six-sided (hexagon) or eight-sided gazebo has a classic pavilion feel and often a peaked roof, while a square or rectangular gazebo is easier to furnish and to fit against a patio edge. This hexagon vs square gazebo guide explains how the size labels compare and which shape suits which use.
At a glance
| Factor | Hexagon (6-sided) | Square or rectangular |
|---|---|---|
| Where you see it | Pop-up screen tents and some soft tops | Almost all hardtops and most canopies |
| Floor area for the same label | Less, depending on how it is measured | The full label (a 10×10 is 100 sq ft) |
| Furniture fit | Round tables and loose seating | Rectangular tables, sectionals, along walls |
| Sidewalls and netting | Six panels, usually included | Four panels; wide aftermarket choice |
| Look | Traditional pavilion | Modern or neutral |
What a “10×10” hexagon really covers
A square 10×10 covers 100 square feet. A hexagon labeled 10×10 covers less, and how much less depends on whether the seller measured corner to corner or flat side to flat side. A regular hexagon that is 10 feet from flat side to flat side covers about 87 square feet. One that is 10 feet from corner to corner covers about 65 square feet. Listings rarely say which, so ask or check the diagram. The same applies to octagons, which lose less area than hexagons but still fall short of the full square.
Seating in practice
Sellers of six-sided screen tents publish seated capacity, which is a useful reality check. VEVOR says its 10×10 six-sided screen tent “comfortably fits 4 seated with furniture” and its 12×12 six-sided model fits 6 seated, while its 15×15 eight-sided version fits 10 seated. For a square 10×10 canopy, CROWN SHADES quotes “100 square feet of shade,” and our What Size Gazebo Do I Need? guide explains why standing capacity figures run high.
Choice and availability
Square and rectangular shapes dominate. In our catalog, only about 30 listings are hexagonal or octagonal, and most are pop-up screen tents from VEVOR, plus a few pop-ups from SUNJOY, Outsunny, and COBIZI. Nearly every permanent hardtop is square or rectangular. If you want a hardtop, the choice is effectively made for you.
Enclosure
Six-sided screen tents usually come with all six panels. VEVOR includes “6 removable wind cloths” with several models. Square gazebos use four panels, and replacement netting and curtains are much easier to find in standard square and rectangular sizes. See Best Gazebo Mosquito Netting.

Who should skip each
Skip a hexagon if you need a specific table size to fit, or if the listing does not say how the size was measured. Skip a square if a traditional rounded look matters most and you only need casual seating.

How we put this guide together
We compared the listings in our product catalog (October 2026) on the specifications and claims each manufacturer publishes. Counts are approximate and refer to listings, so size and color variants of one model are counted separately. Wind, snow, and load figures are manufacturer claims, not our own measurements, and quotes are taken from the named listings. Hexagon areas are calculated from standard geometry for a regular hexagon. Our evaluations are based on manufacturer specifications and aggregated owner feedback.
