A pop-up canopy is a large, light sail on four thin legs. It has to be held down every time you set it up. You can stake it into the ground, weigh down each leg, or do both. This canopy weights vs stakes guide explains which works where.
At a glance
| Factor | Canopy weights | Stakes |
|---|---|---|
| Works on | Any surface: pavement, decks, sand, grass | Soil and grass; spiral stakes also in sand |
| How they hold | Dead weight on each leg | Grip in the ground |
| Types | Sand bags, water bags, pre-filled cement weights | Straight pins, spiral or corkscrew anchors |
| Portability | Heavy once filled; sand bags empty for transport | Light and compact |
| Allowed at events | Often required on hard surfaces | Not allowed on pavement; may be restricted on fields |
| Cost | Higher | Lower |
Weights
Weights are the only option on hard surfaces. Fill-it-yourself sand bags dominate: ABCCANOPY sells a 4-pack labeled 150 lbs (sand not included) that fits “leg sizes ranging from 15mm to 50mm,” and Eurmax sells 4-packs with a “360° locking” strap. MASTERCANOPY makes water bags, about 10 liters each, and ABCCANOPY sells weights “pre-filled with cement” that are ready to use. Check the total weight per leg your canopy maker recommends, and secure the weight low on the leg so it cannot swing. Many events set their own minimum weight per leg, so check the rules.
Stakes
Stakes are light and cheap, and they work well in firm soil. OK5STAR sells 9 inch steel stakes and says longer stakes “drive deeper into the earth” than shorter 7 inch ones. Spiral anchors grip better in loose soil and sand: Eurmax says its spiral stakes grip “sand, lawn, dirt & icy ground tightly.” Before you drive any stake, make sure there are no buried lines; call 811 before digging if you are unsure. Stakes do nothing on concrete or a deck.
Using both
In practice, the most secure setup on grass is stakes through the leg feet plus guy ropes, with weights added for gusty days. Commercial kits often include both: CROWN SHADES packs stakes and guy ropes with its commercial canopy, and Eurmax includes four sandbags. No anchoring makes a pop-up storm-proof. Take the canopy down when strong wind is forecast. See How to Secure a Pop-Up Gazebo.

Who should skip each
Skip stakes alone on any hard surface, on sand without spiral anchors, or on windy sites. Skip weights alone if you cannot reach the weight per leg your canopy maker recommends; a light weight on a tall leg gives a false sense of security.

How we put this guide together
We compared the listings in our product catalog (October 2026) on the specifications and claims each manufacturer publishes. Counts are approximate and refer to listings, so size and color variants of one model are counted separately. Wind, snow, and load figures are manufacturer claims, not our own measurements, and quotes are taken from the named listings. Our evaluations are based on manufacturer specifications and aggregated owner feedback.
