Pergola listings use three layouts that are easy to confuse. A freestanding pergola stands on four or more posts. A wall-mounted pergola fastens to your house on one side. And an “against the wall” pergola is freestanding, but has a straight side designed to sit flush next to a wall without being attached. Knowing which one you are buying is the first step in any freestanding vs wall-mounted pergola decision.

The “against the wall” middle ground

Some retractable pergolas are freestanding but shaped to sit beside the house. PURPLE LEAF describes its 9.5×13 model as having a “straight side design” that “can be against the wall to blend beautifully with your home.” Outsunny suggests placing its 10×20 lean-to style pergola “in a wind-sheltered location, such as next to a wall or in a corner.” These give you a wall-side look without drilling, which suits renters. Read the listing carefully: a model described as “against the wall” is not necessarily designed to be fastened to it.

True wall-mounted pergolas

A wall-mounted pergola uses the house as one side of the structure. Aoxun says its wall-mounted models anchor “to compatible brick, concrete, or wood stud wall” and include expansion bolts. Backyard Discovery sells the Evanston as a galvanized steel wall-mounted louvered kit, and Vita sells attached vinyl pergolas. Because the wall carries part of the load, it has to be sound, and the fasteners need to go into solid material, not just siding. If you are unsure, have a contractor check before installation. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions exactly.

Drainage near the house

Wall-mounted pergolas with a closed roof slope water away from the wall. Aoxun says its slight-slope design helps “protect your exterior walls and foundation from moisture-related damage.” With an open or fabric roof, rain will reach the wall side, so plan for runoff the same way you would without a pergola. Keep any gutters clear, and check the joint where the pergola meets the wall each season.

Roof choices

Freestanding pergolas offer every roof type. Wall-mounted options are more limited but growing, including louvered models from Aoxun, BPS, and Backyard Discovery. Choose freestanding if

  • You want the pergola in the yard, away from the house.
  • You want the widest choice of sizes and roofs.
  • You may move house or rearrange the yard.

Who should skip each

Skip wall-mounted if you rent, cannot confirm the wall can take the load, or do not want holes in your exterior. Skip freestanding if four posts would crowd a narrow patio. Skip against-the-wall models if you expect strong wind and want the house to help brace the structure; they are not designed to be fastened.

How we put this guide together

We compared the listings in our product catalog (October 2026) on the specifications and claims each manufacturer publishes. Counts are approximate and refer to listings, so size and color variants of one model are counted separately. Wind, snow, and load figures are manufacturer claims, not our own measurements, and quotes are taken from the named listings. Our evaluations are based on manufacturer specifications and aggregated owner feedback.
