Where you put a hardtop gazebo matters as much as which one you buy, because its wind and snow ratings depend on how it is anchored. The two most common bases are a wood deck and a concrete patio or slab. This gazebo on deck vs concrete patio guide explains the differences in hardware, load, and preparation.

Concrete: what manufacturers expect

Most hardtop kits are designed around concrete. HOTEEL says its 12×20 base “comes with expansion screws for concrete floors,” Modern Shade includes “16 expansion screws” for concrete on a 6×8 grill gazebo, and HAPPATIO includes 12 for a 10×12. PURPLE LEAF is unusually specific for one pergola: 1/4 inch expansion screws, concrete “3 inches deep or more,” or concrete footings. Before you drill, confirm your slab meets the manual’s minimum thickness and is not cracked near the anchor points. Full steps are in How to Anchor a Hardtop Gazebo.

Decks: check hardware and structure

Some sellers support decks directly. Modern Shade, Covered Outdoor, and Aoxun list expansion screws “for secure anchoring into concrete, decking, or garden ground,” and UDPATIO describes a fixing system “compatible with concrete, wood decks, and lawns.” Others warn that the included hardware is for concrete only: HOTEEL notes that buyers installing on wood floors “must purchase wood panel-specific expansion screws.” Read the manual before you buy.

Hardware is only half of it. A hardtop gazebo is heavy, and its roof can hold snow, so the deck has to carry that weight at four or more small points. Screwing only into deck boards gives far less hold than fastening into joists or blocking underneath. If your deck is older, or you are unsure how it is framed, have a deck builder or structural professional check it before installation. Never add improvised anchoring that the manufacturer does not describe.

Drainage

Hardtops drop a lot of water off the roof or out of the posts. On a deck, water falls through the gaps, which is fine if the area below drains. On a slab, make sure water from gutters and posts runs away from the house, not toward it.

Permits and HOA

Adding a permanent structure to a deck may count as a change to the deck itself in some localities. Local codes and HOA rules vary, so check before installation.

Choose a concrete patio if

  • You want to use the hardware most kits include.
  • You want the steadiest base for wind and snow ratings.
  • The slab meets the thickness the manual requires.

Choose a deck if

  • The deck is the natural outdoor room and is in good condition.
  • The gazebo maker supports deck installation and you have the right fasteners.
  • You can confirm the framing can carry the load.

Who should skip each

Skip the deck for a large hardtop if you cannot confirm the framing, or if the manual only covers concrete. Skip the patio if the slab is thin, cracked, or unknown and you are not willing to pour footings.

How we put this guide together

We compared the listings in our product catalog (October 2026) on the specifications and claims each manufacturer publishes. Counts are approximate and refer to listings, so size and color variants of one model are counted separately. Wind, snow, and load figures are manufacturer claims, not our own measurements, and quotes are taken from the named listings. Our evaluations are based on manufacturer specifications and aggregated owner feedback.
