Many gazebos come with two layers on a double track: mesh netting on the inside and fabric curtains on the outside. If yours came with neither, or one has worn out, you may be choosing between them. This mosquito netting vs privacy curtains guide explains what each layer does well and when it is worth having both.
At a glance
| Factor | Mosquito netting | Privacy curtains |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Keep insects out | Block views, sun, and some wind |
| Airflow | High | Low when closed |
| View out | Yes, softened | No when closed |
| Light | Most daylight passes | Light-filtering to near-blackout, by fabric |
| Wind | Lets wind through | Catches wind; open or tie back in gusts |
| Typical attachment | Rings or hooks on a track; zippers at corners | Rings, hooks, or grommets on a track or rod |
| Sizing | Sold by gazebo size (10×10, 10×12, 12×14) | Sold by panel width and length |
Bugs
Only netting keeps mosquitoes out. Gazebo netting is sold in sets of four panels sized to the gazebo, usually with zippers at the corners. COWVIE describes “the reinforced double-sided zipper on each of the four netting panels,” and Sunjoy’s replacement set covers “all 4 sides of the gazebo.” Curtains are not a bug barrier: even when closed, insects get through the gaps between panels and at the floor. See Best Gazebo Mosquito Netting.
Privacy and sun
Curtains handle privacy and low sun. Heavier outdoor fabrics block more light: RYB HOME says its 230 GSM curtains block “up to 80%-90% of harsh sunlight and 90% of UV rays.” Netting softens the view from outside, especially in darker colors, but it does not hide you. If the gazebo faces a neighbor’s window or the west sun, curtains help. See Best Gazebo Privacy Curtains.
Wind
Closed curtains act like sails. They put extra load on the frame in gusts, so tie them back or remove them when wind picks up, and follow your gazebo manual. Netting lets most wind pass, though PURPLE LEAF still describes its heavy netting as staying stable only “in 10 mph winds,” so it is not a windbreak.
Fit and installation
Netting is sized to the gazebo, and fit varies by brand. APEX GARDEN asks buyers to “do the measurements of your gazebo prior ordering,” and COWVIE lists a range of sizes its universal netting adapts to. Curtains are sold by panel, so you add panels until the side is covered. Check whether your gazebo has a single or double track before buying both.

Who should skip each
Skip netting if insects are rare where you live and you mostly want shade. Skip curtains if your site is windy and you will not tie them back, or if you want an open, airy space.

How we put this guide together
We compared the listings in our product catalog (October 2026) on the specifications and claims each manufacturer publishes. Counts are approximate and refer to listings, so size and color variants of one model are counted separately. Wind, snow, and load figures are manufacturer claims, not our own measurements, and quotes are taken from the named listings. Our evaluations are based on manufacturer specifications and aggregated owner feedback.
