A wood gazebo and a metal gazebo can look similar from across the yard, especially now that most wood kits use a steel roof. The differences are in the posts and beams: how they age, how much care they need, and how heavy the kit is. This wood vs metal gazebo guide compares the two using the listings in our catalog.
At a glance
| Factor | Wood gazebo | Metal gazebo |
|---|---|---|

What “wood gazebo” means in practice
Most wood gazebo kits sold online are hybrids. Backyard Discovery, Sunjoy, Modern Shade, and Aoxun pair cedar posts with a galvanized steel roof. Backyard Discovery describes a “29-gauge” steel roof over “100% Cedar Wood” on its Norwood, and Sunjoy’s 11×13 uses “a durable matte-black, 2-tier steel roof and premium cedar wood frame.” Some lower-cost kits use spruce instead: AMERLIFE sells a 10×12 with a “Spruce Frame and Double Metal Roof.” Cedar is the more decay-resistant wood, so check which species you are getting.
Durability and weather
Well-built wood kits carry strong weather claims. Backyard Discovery states its Saxony grill gazebo withstands “up to 2,100 pounds or up to 30 inches of snow load, and winds up to 100 mph,” and Modern Shade claims 83 mph for a 12×20 wood grill gazebo. Metal hardtops range widely, from about 38 mph on some polycarbonate models to 60 mph or more on many steel-roof models. In both cases the figure applies only when the gazebo is anchored as the manual specifies. Backyard Discovery notes its Barrington “must be anchored as specified” in its instructions. See How to Anchor a Hardtop Gazebo.
Maintenance
Wood needs regular care. Pre-stained cedar still weathers, so plan to clean and re-stain or seal every few years to keep the color and limit checking. Aluminum frames mostly need a wash. Steel frames need you to watch for chips in the powder coat, especially at the feet. Our Gazebo Maintenance Guide has a seasonal checklist.
Assembly
Wood kits are heavy. Backyard Discovery uses 6×6 inch posts on some models, and AMERLIFE estimates 4 adults and about 2 to 4 hours for its 10×12. Metal kits have lighter parts but more small hardware. Modern Shade recommends 2 to 3 people for its 12×16. Budget a full day for either and have helpers for the roof.
Choose wood if
- You want a natural look that blends into a garden.
- You are willing to maintain the finish.
- You prefer the solid feel of heavy timber posts.

Who should skip each
Skip wood if you will not re-stain or seal it, or if the listing does not name the wood species. Skip metal if a warm timber look is the main reason you are buying; wood-grain powder coat is a finish, not the real thing.

How we put this guide together
We compared the listings in our product catalog (October 2026) on the specifications and claims each manufacturer publishes. Counts are approximate and refer to listings, so size and color variants of one model are counted separately. Wind, snow, and load figures are manufacturer claims, not our own measurements, and quotes are taken from the named listings. Our evaluations are based on manufacturer specifications and aggregated owner feedback.
